Inter‐Model Spread of North Tropical Atlantic Trans‐Basin Effect Substantially Biases Tropical Pacific Sea Surface Temperature Multiyear Prediction

چکیده
Sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the tropical Pacific (TP) has world-wide climate and economic influences; hence, improving its prediction is of great interest. Recent modeling studies suggested that north Atlantic can influence TP SST prediction. However, models are subject to biases both Pacific, it remains an open question whether these affect trans-basin linkages SST. To investigate this issue, we apply linear inverse observations models. We find removing forcing indeed strongly lowers multiyear skills Models show a large spread effect, which leads markedly different skills. Our study highlights necessity narrow inter-model for more reliable

A model of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature climatology
A model for the climatological mean sea surface temperature (SST) of the tropical Pacific Ocean is developed. The upper ocean response is computed using a time dependent, linear, reduced gravity model, with the addition of a constant depth frictional surface layer. The full three-dimensional temperature equation and a surface heat flux parameterization that requires pecification ofonly wind spe...
متن کاملMultiyear Observations of the Tropical Atlantic Atmosphere
T he tropical Atlantic Ocean is a region of significant meteorological and oceanographic interest in terms of atmospheric chemistry and mesoscale-to-synoptic dynamical and thermodynamical processes. Nonmaritime air masses from the African continent advect out over the Atlantic within easterly winds and waves, significantly impacting the meteorology and climate dynamics downstream into the Weste...

Tropical Atlantic Biases in CCSM4
This paper focuses on diagnosing biases in the seasonal climate of the tropical Atlantic in the twentiethcentury simulation of the Community Climate System Model, version 4 (CCSM4). The biases appear in both atmospheric and oceanic components. Mean sea level pressure is erroneously high by a few millibars in the subtropical highs and erroneously low in the polar lows (similar to CCSM3). As a re...
متن کاملNorth Pacific and North Atlantic sea-surface temperature variability during the Holocene
Holocene climate variability is investigated in the North Pacific and North Atlantic realms, using alkenone-derived sea-surface temperature (SST) records as well as a millennial scale simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM). The alkenone SST data indicate a temperature increase over almost the entire North Pacific from 7 cal kyr BP to the present. A dipole p...
